The Stewardship Principles for Corporate Grantmakers are ready for prime time. In 2003, you identified “best practices” as a top priority. In 2004, your input guided the development of the Stewardship Principles, a blueprint for strengthening performance. In 2005, theory becomes practice—and that’s what this Opening Session for Corporate Grantmakers is about.  We invite you to learn how the current climate reinforces the field’s need for these Principles, and to explore how giving programs and foundations can use the Stewardship Principles and Options to Improve Performance to strengthen their governance, management and grantmaking practices.

The keynote speaker for this session is Marilyn Laurie,  principal,  Laurie Consulting, and former executive vice president of brand strategy and advertising, AT&T, and former chairman, AT&T Foundation.

OPENING PLENARY

The 2005 conference theme, "Generosity and Integrity: Values for Leadership in Philanthropy," is a call for grantmakers to address the organizational and leadership challenges of generosity and integrity. Chairman Anthony Pico of the Viejas Band of the Kumeyaay Indians will open the conference by offering a traditional American Indian blessing, followed by a brief "state of philanthropy" address by Council on Foundations President and CEO Dorothy Ridings, and remarks from Emmett Carson, President and CEO, The Minneapolis Foundation and Chair of the Council's Board of Directors and conference leadership.

The keynote address will be given by Mónica Lozano, who will share her thoughts on the social, economic and political influence of the Hispanic/Latino population - locally and nationally - and the unique challenges facing the community. Lozano is publisher and chief executive officer of La Opinión, the largest Spanish-language daily newspaper in the U.S., which was founded by her family. Ted Waitt, co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Gateway, The Waitt Family Foundation and Skip Rhodes, Manager, Corporate Community Involvement, ChevronTexaco, will welcome attendees to San Diego and the conference.
