As he welcomes us to his city, Mayor O'Malley will help set the stage for the conference by identifying some of the challenges Baltimore faces regarding race, class and difference.

Plenary Luncheon: "Education for the 21st Century in a Diverse Society"
Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, as well as a community foundation trustee, will speak about his experience with the Myerhoff Fellows, the most successful program in the nation in preparing African American youth for advanced graduate work in math and science.

Rinku Sen examines the moral and political imperatives for changing face of racism and reflects on community organizing as a model for achieving positive change.

Closing Plenary Luncheon: "The Rise of the Creative Class"
Richard Florida, expert on economic development and author of the best-selling book, The Rise of the Creative Class, discusses how this societal group is transforming work, leisure, community and everyday life. His insights will stimulate debate about the causes and consequences of economic growth and change the framework for discussing social and economic inequality. Cities and regions across the United States and the world have embarked on new creative strategies based on his book.
