PROGRAM INFORMATION
Institute for New Board Members

The Institute for New Board Members is a professional development day for foundation board members and trustees. It is an opportunity to learn about basic legal, ethical and day-to-day responsibilities of foundations. The Council on Foundations and BoardSource have joined forces to develop this hands-on, intensive training in governance for foundation board members.

Faculty
Institute faculty members include nonprofit experts, grantmakers from a variety of foundations and Council on Foundations and BoardSource staff.

What Will New Board Members Do?
  • Learn the principles and practices of good governance
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a board member
  • Network with colleagues from around the country.
Who Should Attend?
  • New board members and trustees from all types of foundations
  • More experienced board members who seek a refresher on foundation governance, law and best practices.
What Will Participants Learn?
  • Basic board responsibilities and codes of ethics.
  • Legal basics of foundation boards.
  • Leadership skills for more effective governance.
  • Issues specific to foundations similar to their own.
Special Resources for Board Institute Participants

For Board Members
All board member participants will receive a free one-year membership to BoardSource — a premier provider of resources and services, leadership tips and knowledge about board-related issues — courtesy of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

For Community Foundation Board Members
Participating board members from community foundations will receive a copy of The Guide for Community Foundation Board Members written by BoardSource and the Council on Foundations, also courtesy of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

Scholarships
A limited number of scholarships covering tuition are available on a first-come, first-served basis for board members representing community foundations with assets of less than $25 million. To apply, send an e-mail to winterinstitutes@cof.org or call 202/467-0438.
