In this short opening session, participants will have the opportunity to meet their colleagues. Please bring plenty of business cards for networking activities.


Ethics in Practice
9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m.
In this session, participants will explore some of the philosophical and historical antecedents of foundation ethics.

Foundations and the Law
10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
This popular two-hour session conducted by Council legal staff examines the most basic laws affecting grantmaking foundations. Concepts, tax sections, terms and program officer fiduciary responsibilities are made more easily understandable to the nonlawyer.

Roundtable Lunch and Discussions
1:00 p.m.-2:15 p.m.
Attendees of the Institute for New Grantmakers can participate in small group, in-depth discussions facilitated by Council staff. Join your colleagues for lunch, networking and a meeting of the minds.

Managing Grants
2:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m.
This session introduces the grantmaking styles, grants decisionmaking processes and techniques of grants management for program officers. A substantial web notebook of additional forms and helpful grants administration and proposal checklists is included in participant registration.

Analyzing Financial Statements
9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Learn the basics of reading and interpreting grantee financial documents in this fast-paced, interactive session. This session has been expanded to two hours to ensure that there is time for all of your questions.

Building Community Relationships: Advancing Your Charitable Mission Through Communications
11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
Effective communication is a critical component in establishing quality, long standing relationships that bolster grantees (internal) and raise public acceptance of your foundation's role and value in the community (external). This session will show the tremendous potential for shaping more favorable public opinion toward foundations and assist members in crafting their communications strategy. Participants will also learn crucial tips on how to talk to various audiences, including policymakers and the media, about the work your foundation does and its importance as a community resource.

Lunch and Conversations with Council Staff
12:45 p.m.-1:45 p.m.
Meet Council experts to learn about international grantmaking, research, public policy and the Council's new initiative "Building Strong and Ethical Foundations."

Evaluation: The Best Management Tool
2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
This highly interactive session presents the decisions program officers face when monitoring grants and evaluating programs. Learn an easy-to-assimilate evaluation model for use in everyday work. This session has been expanded to two hours to encourage participant questions.
