Explore values, vision and strategy for your philanthropy with Alison Goldberg of Resource Generation and Sharna Goldseker of The Andrea and Charles Bronfman Philanthropies.

    Intergenerational Philanthropy Workshop

    How can we learn from other generationsal perspectives within our family foundations? Explore strategies to tackle issues such as the involvement of young people and addressing "taboo" subjects such as wealth and privilege. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences and will receive resources to share with their families.

    To support the youth in New York City, please consider bringing along a new or gently used children's book. Drop your selection in the collection bins in Resource Central when you register. Volunteers will sort the books by age group for donation to the Harlem Children's Zone.

    Scenic Hudson River Train Trip
    and Dia Contemporary Art Museum

    Make the ultimate site visit - combine the environment, the arts, smart growth and restoration! Travel up the Hudson on one of the world's most scenic train rides to the new Dia: Beacon Contemporary Art Museum in Beacon, New York. Tour commentary is provided by the leader of Scenic Hudson, a foundation dedicated to ensuring that this fabled waterway is environmentally and economically sustainable.

    Family Dynamics and Foundation Performance:
    A Workshop for Experienced Grantmakers

    This workshop, designed for grantmakers with at least five years experience in their family foundation, will increase your ability to deal with troubling family dynamics by:
  • Providing an understanding of the power in family systems
  • Increasing your comfort level in the face of conflict
  • Introducing concepts and research about family systems that can be applied to specific dilemmas in foundation governance

    Workshop leader Kelin Gersick, Ph.D., is co-founder and a senior partner of Lansberg, Gersick & Associates; he is also a management fellow at the Yale School of Organization and Management. Gersick recently completed "Generations of Giving: Leadership and Continuity in Family Foundations," a nationwide study of multigenerational family foundations, sponsored by the National Center for Family Philanthropy.

    The Winter Garden and Ground Zero

    The Winter Garden was a soaring glass and steel structure, directly across from the World Trade Center. Suffering massive damage in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, it was restored in time for the first anniversary commemoration. Thanks to a virtual miracle of public-private partnership, you'll learn the remarkable story of the Garden's rebirth and the plans for creating an on-site memorial to the victims of September 11th. There is a 25-person minimum for this event.

    Food & a Flick with the Producers

    Sunday night's special dinner and movie will feature the Oscar-nominated film, The Collector of Bedford Street. It's the story of a 60-year-old mentally challenged resident of Greenwich Village who raised thousands of dollars for charity. Meet and talk with both Alice Elliot, the filmmaker and Larry Selman, the subject of the documentary.

    All site visits are scheduled for Monday, February 9. Space is limited. Tickets are free but required. Tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the conference registration desk. Lunch is included.

    The Door
    10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

    New York City's oldest and most comprehensive youth center, The Door provides free medical and dental care, legal services, counseling, education, arts programs, meals and recreation to its diverse 6,000 youth members.

    Central Park Conservancy
    10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

    Celebrate the 150th anniversary of Central Park. Restored through a public-private partnership, you'll tour the park with Central Park Conservancy staff.

    The Point
    Per Scholas
    12:00-3:30 p.m.

    Visit two nonprofits helping in the rebirth of the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. The Point channels the skills of at-risk youth toward legitimate artistic, entrepreneurial activities. Per Scholas trains residents to repairs old computers donated by corporations and resells them at minimal cost to low-income families.

    Common Ground Community
    12:00-3:30 p.m.
    Common Ground restored the historic Times Square Hotel, creating 650 efficiency apartments for low-income, special needs and formerly homeless adults. The facility offers residents a way to live independently.


    EVENING EVENT

    On Monday evening, make plans to join your colleagues at Avery Fisher Hall for appetizers, aperitifs and a performance by The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Complete your evening with a late dinner reservation at a restaurant near Lincoln Center.

    Stanley Nelson, Executive Producer and a 2002 MacArthur "genius" Fellow will be in attendance during the screening of his film Running: The Campaign for City Council and one of the 2003 festival winners. A powerful film which brings alive the implications of political participation in today's diverse America.

    Meet the Filmmaker
    2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

    Filmmakers Judith Helfand, Daniel Gold and Julia Parker will be present at the screening of their film Blue Vinyl. As funny as it is thought-provoking and disturbing, this feature documentary explores the daily choices we make to use vinyl, and the environmental consequences of those choices. The film's wildly successful grassroots outreach campaign is as notable as its wryly-engaging storytelling.
